About Course

Language, Texts, Technology? Huh? Say what?

The WSU catalog says this course is about exploring the relationships between technology and communication and writing practices from a historical point of view.

In more words and as the title of the course suggests, we will explore three things: language, texts, and technology (LTT). We'll investigate how LTT interacts, intertwines, influences, and creates important aspects of our communication culture. We'll be looking at how technology has changed and shaped our communication practices by examining closely and critically printing/books, maps, and social media. This careful consideration will take a historical view as we try to understand how language and texts have been influenced by technologies. Because our approach is historical, we won't start our research with the influences of digital technology. In each unit, however, we will examine how digital technologies are shaping communication. And in our unit on social media, we'll focus exclusively on digital technologies’ impact on language and text.
